Wanee Festival 2013
The one and only true Hippie Fest returns!
-review of the shows at the Suwanee Music Park (Live Oak), by Scott Shapiro.
Led by the Hall of Fame rock group The Allman Brothers, Wanee fest yet again kicked into an overdrive of serenity. It's the one event in Florida that truly epitomizes all the positive energy that seemed so long ago. Afterall, people born long after the hippie era kind of revamped it and re-energized it into an annual event of colorful, yet scrubby clothes, exotic BBQs, pleasurable scents and jammin' vibes.
This year the infectious tunes slithered into every crest of the park, not just on the grounds of where the bands were playing, but seemingly every camp site not within a whisper of the artists. However, those camped a ways away from the entrance often found themselves surrounded by a horde of new friends at their closer camp site. That's the thing about this festival, it just has a way of bringing new people together. You don't even have to know the songs, but just enjoy the vibe. And that vibe was out of control with bliss, thanks to bands such as Gov't Mule, Les Claypool's Duo De Twang, North Mississippi Allstars and Widespread Panic.
This is by far the most uplifting and peaceful event to come to Florida each year, a must for any resident, out-of-towner or guitar enthusiast.
Songs from The Allman Brothers setlist included: Hot 'Lanta, Statesboro Blues,I Walk on Guilded Splinters, Blue Sky, Dusk Till Dawn, Trouble No More, Leave My Blues at Home, Worried Down With the Blues, Rain, Can't Find My Way Home, Revival, Rocking Horse. What an amazing festival. This was my 1st Wanee and a very cool experience. The people I met along the way were friendly, happy, neighborly - one big friendly Wanee. The campsites were a little tight but all my neighbors were helpful to a novice camper like me. Wanee Festival is an annual event hosted by the Allman Brothers Band, held since 2005 at the Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park, in Live Oak, FL. The festival is held outdoors on two stages (Peach Stage & Mushroom Stage).
